The term "volunteering" in its modern sense, or even more so "volunteering" was not familiar to Russia until the mid-80s of the 20th century. Until that time, "volunteers" were first of all called people who, in a wartime, without waiting for a mobilization agenda for military service, went to defend their country, this was the case in the First World War and the Great Patriotic War.
