Entry level EOS cameras

Let's start with entry-level EOS cameras. Canon calls these models enthusiast cameras. These cameras are intended for amateurs, not professional photographers. If you are buying a digital camera for the first time, or are on a budget, then you will definitely choose one of the options below.
It is important to note that the same entry-level Canon EOS camera will be called differently depending on the region where it is distributed. Thus, the familiar 700D for us will be called Kiss X7i in Japan and T5i Rebel in North America. As a result of such a significant difference in names, confusion can sometimes occur when reading different material.
Canon currently has five enthusiast models:

EOS 100D (aka Rebel SL1 and Kiss X7)

March 2013
Main characteristics:

  • 63 zone evaluative metering
  • Live View and Movie Mode
  • DIGIC 5 processor
  • Using SD Memory Cards
  • 3 inch fixed LCD touch screen
  • Built-in flash without remote flash control capability

The Canon EOS 100D is the smallest and lightest digital Camera in the world. The camera was created for photographers who want to take their creativity to the next level by moving away from shooting with their compacts or smart devices and don't want to buy a big camera.
It's ideal for photographers who don't want to carry around a heavy and bulky camera all day long, or for those who want to bring back quality shots when they return from a vacation or regular trip. This model will easily fit in your purse, and you can always take it with you to interesting events.
The small size of the EOS 100D will be indispensable when traveling, and this is a huge advantage of this camera compared to other EOS cameras. The small size and convenience of the camera is also an important criterion for many street photographers.
In terms of technical ability, the camera is similar to the EOS 700D, although it does not have many features. The main feature of the model, as mentioned earlier, is its size. If size does not matter to you, then consider more advanced models.

EOS 1100D (Rebel T3/Kiss X50)

March 2011
Main characteristics:

  • 12.3 MP APS-C sensor
  • 9 focus points and 1 cross sensor
  • 63 zone evaluative metering
  • Live View and Movie Mode
  • DIGIC 4 processor
  • Using SD Memory Cards
  • 2.7 inch fixed LCD
  • Built-in flash, without wireless flash control

This is Canon's most affordable digital SLR. This model is ideal for anyone on a budget. According to its functional characteristics, the camera is a little short of most similar cameras. For example, other entry-level cameras have three-inch displays, perhaps even vari-angle ones, and a built-in unit for controlling external Speedlites.
Matrix EOS 1100D has the smallest resolution. To be completely honest, when buying this camera, you will most likely outgrow it very quickly. There is information that Canon may update this model after some time.
Despite all these shortcomings, this camera will be an excellent purchase for you if you are rather limited in your cash. This is a good model for learning the photographic craft and is by far the cheapest model on this list. The camera can be an amazing gift for your loved ones who are interested in photography.

EOS 600D (Rebel T3i/Kiss X5)

March 2011
Main characteristics:

  • 18 megapixel APS-C sensor
  • 9 focus points with 1 cross sensor
  • 63 zone evaluative metering
  • Live View and Movie Mode
  • DIGIC 4 processor
  • Combination with SD memory cards
  • 3" vari-angle LCD

EOS 600D, compared to EOS 100D and 1100D, is a more advanced model. It has a powerful body, a high-resolution sensor and a vari-angle display, which is great for shooting videos and photos at awkward angles (for example, when shooting from the ground).
Another benefit of a vari-angle screen is that you can rotate it and close it, protecting it from external damaging factors. This feature will be very useful when traveling.
You may be interested in this camera if you have previously used another DSLR like the 1100D or one of the older models like the EOS 400D. This model is not as significant as the EOS 700D, but it is much cheaper.

EOS 700D (Rebel T5i/Kiss X7i)

March 2013
Main characteristics:

  • 18 megapixel APS-C sensor
  • 9 focus points with 9 cross sensors
  • 63 zone evaluative metering
  • Live View and Movie Mode
  • DIGIC5 image processor
  • SD card compatibility
  • 3" vari-angle LCD touch screen
  • Built-in wireless flash

The EOS 700D was announced in March and is replacing the EOS 650D (which you can still buy anyway). The EOS 600D remains available and is a cheaper alternative to the 700D.
The main differences between this camera and the 600D are that the 700D has a new image processor, a large ISO range, and a hybrid focus that gives better autofocus performance in Live View and movie mode.
You may be interested in this camera if you are upgrading from the 1100D, or an older model such as the EOS 400D. This is the perfect model if you want to be the proud owner of an advanced EOS camera but don't want to buy heavier and bigger models or advanced cameras like the EOS 6D, 7D or 5D Mark III.

EOS M

July 2012
Main characteristics:

  • 18 megapixel APS-C sensor
  • 31-point hybrid focus
  • 63 zone evaluative metering
  • Live View and Movie Mode
  • DIGIC5 processor
  • Using SD Memory Cards
  • Three inch, fixed LCD display
  • Supplied with the 90EX Speedlite in most parts of the world.

EOS M is the first compact camera Canon and the company's debut in the mirrorless camera market. In fact, this is a smaller version of the EOS 650D, only without the viewfinder.
Another major difference is that the EOS M has its own unique lens mount (EF-M mount). There is currently a choice between two EF-M lenses, and an adapter is available that allows you to mount EF-S and EF mount lenses that are compatible with other EOS cameras.
The main advantages of this model in comparison with other cameras are its small size and good design. The camera comes with an EF-M 22mm lens. The image quality when working with this lens is very good, so this model will be a great companion on every journey of its owner, and will also please any street photographer with its compactness.
However, reviews of the camera's autofocus performance are not encouraging. The lack of a viewfinder means you have to take photos while looking at the screen. This may not be an easy task, especially for those who are accustomed to using the viewfinder.
If the size of the camera is not a priority for you, then consider buying a DSLR for yourself. The optical viewfinder and phase-detection autofocus on these cameras will make your camera more versatile.

The Canon EOS M50 is an entry-level mirrorless camera that sits above the relatively compact EOS M100. Both cameras have an APS-C sensor and separate command dials, but the M50 has a 2.36MP EVF, hot shoe and a more comfortable grip similar to the EOS M5. A hinged touchscreen adorns the back and stellar Dual Pixel autofocus is available when shooting photos and videos.

Same sensor, new processor

The camera uses the same 24MP image sensor as many other Canon cameras like the M5, M6 and M100, as well as the EOS 80D DSLR. But the M50 uses a completely new Digic 8 processor, which gives the camera a number of advantages over other Canon cameras.

The faster burst speed is one of the benefits of the new processor. With autofocus, the M50 can shoot at 7.4 fps and 10 fps with fixed focus. That's a big jump from the M100's 4 frames with autofocus, and even faster than the 80D's 7fps with AF. Although there is a fly in the ointment. The memory buffer fills up in just one second.

Another major benefit of the new Digic 8 chip is the ability to shoot Ultra High Definition Video, making the M50 the first Canon mirrorless camera that can shoot 4K. But…

He shoots 4K, but...

Do not rejoice ahead of time, because the implementation of 4K leaves much to be desired, due to a number of limitations.

The most notable limitation is that you can't use Dual Pixel's excellent autofocus when shooting 4K, which is a shame for Canon. Dual Pixel AF is the only advantage of Canon cameras when shooting video. The M50 can use autofocus in 4K, but with contrast detection, so the camera will focus slowly, hunting for the subject for a long time.

Another big limitation concerns 1.6x crop when shooting UHD video. It is worth considering that the APS-C sensor has a crop of 1.6x relative to the full frame sensor. Thus, 22mm F2 becomes equivalent to a 56mm FOV.

But that's not all news on the video front: the EOS M50 can shoot 1080/60p and 720/120P with Dual Pixel AF. And there's no pesky extra crop if you don't use digital stabilization.

New CR3 Raw format with better compression settings

The M50 is Canon's first camera to offer latest format RAW CR3, which was realized using the new Digic 8 processor. Why add it to an entry-level camera? Because this format includes a new and improved compression option that will be useful to users who want to use Raw, but who are put off by large file sizes.

The old CR2 format is also available. There is a possibility of "small" and "medium" compression, which leads to a decrease in resolution compared to a regular CR2 file. Compressed CR3 can be half the size of a full CR3 file.

Dual Pixel AF Coverage Zoom, Eye Detection Mode

The M50 has received several autofocus improvements. There are currently 99 selectable points, up from 49 on previous M-series cameras. AF point coverage is 80% of the frame with most M lenses. Users now have higher focus accuracy.

However, with some lenses, notably the 18-150mm, 28mm Macro, and 55-200mm, autofocus coverage increases to 88% x 100%, and the number of selectable points increases to 143. Canon representatives did not provide any details as to why this is happening. However, we hope that any new lens will offer wider autofocus coverage.

The M50 also received a new "Eye Detection AF" setting. A similar autofocus mode for lasers has long been used in Sony cameras and photographers are very fond of their cameras for this feature. Unfortunately Canon's implementation seems less useful as this mode cannot track the eyes of moving subjects.

Enhanced Wireless

It's not Canon's first mirrorless camera with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, but it's the first to offer the option to send every shot to your smartphone as soon as it's taken. The Canon M50 has a dedicated Wi-Fi button.

High resolution articulated touch screen

The 1.04MP touch screen can be fully flipped up for taking selfies. This is very useful for those who make vlogs or just like to shoot self-portraits. It can also flip over to the camera, which will protect the display when transporting the camera.

There aren't many controls on the camera body, but the touch screen gives you easy access to settings. You can use it to change quite a few settings, access the quick menu, and move the AF point. In addition, the implementation of the touch screen from Canon was a success. The display is responsive and all gestures and touches are fast and accurate.

The electronic viewfinder has a resolution of 2.36MP. It is very bright and clear. It is convenient and pleasant to use it.

Satisfactory battery life

The battery life is not too great. On a single charge, the camera can take 235 frames according to the CIPA rating. When traveling and hiking, you will definitely need a spare battery. You can use the "Eco" mode, which reduces power consumption and increases battery life up to 370 frames. As usual, in real conditions you will be able to take much more pictures.

The M50 uses the same LP-E12 battery as the M100. A spare battery will cost about $50. It's not cheap, but you can always buy a battery from a third party manufacturer.

Ports, hot shoe and pop-up flash

In terms of connectivity, the M50 offers a 3.5mm mic jack, which is rare in entry-level products. There's also a Micro-HDMI and Micro-USB port, the latter doesn't support charging.

Photographers liked the M100's pop-up flash because you can use your finger to aim it at the ceiling. The M50 lacks this feature. It can only be aimed at the subject. However, unlike the M100, the M50 offers a hot shoe for using an external flash.

More buttons than M100 and new silent mode

We've already mentioned that the M50 doesn't have a lot of buttons, but it does have more controls than the more affordable M100. Additional buttons include exposure lock, AF frame selector, and a custom function button.

The EOS M50 has a built-in user manual that explains the functions and how to use them. This guide isn't in the M100, and it's good that Canon is bringing it back to entry-level cameras.

The M50 also gets a new silent shooting mode that will come in handy in many situations, like photographing sleeping babies or shooting at lectures, museums or libraries where you don't want to create extra noise. You won't be able to control exposure settings when using silent mode, as with all scene modes, but these are good features for beginners.

What do you think?

The EOS M50 is Canon's first mirrorless camera with 4K and auto-send photos to a smartphone. It is also the first Canon camera to use the new Digic 8 processor and the updated CR3 Raw format. On top of that, Dual Pixel autofocus has been expanded and improved with the addition of eye focus. it great set improvements for the entry-level camera.

Do you think the EOS M50 is a sign that Canon is serious about developing mirrorless cameras? Are you frustrated by the limitations of 4K video? Also limited at the moment by the small family of M-series lenses, of which there are only 7 at the moment, especially when competitors Fujifilm X or the Micro Four Thirds system offer a very wide range of lenses.

Sooner or later, but having played enough with mobile digital photography, a novice photographer thinks about purchasing a camera with interchangeable lenses. And if, in addition to the high quality of the content received, compactness is important to the user, then many incline their choice in favor of without SLR cameras. And manufacturers understand everything perfectly, thereby constantly updating their lineups to meet the needs of a wide variety of users. These include Canon, which this fall introduced an entry-level mirrorless system camera - CanonEOSM10.

Let's try to figure out in practice how interesting this device is for the average user. According to a good tradition, we propose to start the review of new items with technical characteristics:

Appearance, arrangement of elements

The design of the Canon EOS M10 follows the design philosophy of the Canon EOS M and Canon EOS M2: a slim body with smooth lines and no protrusions. Compared to its forefathers, the novelty has a built-in flash of a folding design, but there is no “hot shoe”. When compared with the older model, the device looks rather simplified, which emphasizes its focus on undemanding users.

The main part of the camera design is made of high-quality and non-staining plastic with a slightly rough lining. Metal bayonet only. The case does not have dust and moisture protection, so it is better not to tempt fate in the rain, although light frost should not damage it. The build quality is at a very high level: all parts fit well, and nothing creaks or bulges during operation. By the way, the body of the camera is presented on the market in black and white colors, and the lenses of the EF-M line are available in dark gray and light gray colors.

The dimensions and weight (108 x 66.6 x 35 mm and 301 g) of the Canon EOS M10 are comparable to the compact (109.6 x 62.8 x 35.7 mm and 283 g), which makes the new product an excellent option for everyday use - takes little space and absolutely no burden when transporting. True, it largely depends on the lens used.

The ergonomics of the device is clearly designed for a novice photographer or for those who are used to shooting, leaving all the settings at the mercy of automation. Although, if desired, all the necessary parameters can be adjusted manually. The lack of an abundance of analog controls is compensated by the combination of a quick settings menu with a touch screen, which is so simple and understandable to the modern user. But what is really missing is at least a small protrusion handle for a more comfortable hold. The thumb rest and neck strap insurance help a little, but shooting with one hand (especially with a zoom lens) presents some challenges. Of the pleasant features, we note the location of the memory card compartment on the side, access to which remains even when mounted on a tripod.

Lens

The lens mount is via the Canon EF-M mount. At the moment, you can count on the use of only five versions of lenses. At the same time, it should be noted that the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM compact zoom lens was created specifically for this camera, which will be the main one in kit kits.

Our copy arrived as a press sample and was equipped with a Canon EF-M 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which can be found in more detail in the review. Expand your fleet of optics with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS M, which allows you to use Canon EF and EF-S solutions. Also, using unofficial M42 or M39 adapters, you can install old manual lenses.

Display, viewfinder

The Canon EOS M10 is equipped with a 3-inch (7.5 cm) sRGB ClearView II (TFT) LCD screen with a conventional 3:2 aspect ratio. Its resolution is approximately 1,040,000 dots (i.e. 720 x 480 pixels). It is completely identical to the older model and is characterized by high detail, pleasant color reproduction with a good level of contrast and wide viewing angles. The brightness level of the backlight is quite good (five steps of adjustment are available) and allows you to view information even on a sunny day. There is a good anti-reflective filter.

The display unit is equipped with a folding design, however, only in the vertical plane (180° upwards). This allows you to conveniently shoot from a lower position or take self-portraits or vlogging, however, it limits shooting from a higher position, for example, holding the camera at outstretched arms above your head (however, nothing prevents you from simply turning the device over and then the shutter button will be under the thumb of your left hand). The developers also took care of the possibility of touch control, which provides shooting or selecting a focus point / tracking an object with one touch. You can also scroll through, zoom in and play back captured content, navigate through menus, and change other settings. The multi-touch technology works quickly and clearly, without false positives and other inconveniences, including in rather frosty weather.

The camera is deprived of a viewfinder, including as an additional accessory due to the lack of a “hot shoe”, which is a privilege of the older model.

Interface, capabilitiessettings

The Canon EOS M10 camera received a traditional and rather convenient graphical interface inherent in branded entry-level SLRs and an older mirrorless camera. The main menu is presented in the form of three horizontal tabs ("SHOOT", "SETUP" and "C.Fn"), which in turn are divided into additional submenus. They are filled with all sorts of functions and settings that give you access to almost all camera parameters. The problem of the lack of a mechanical mode dial was solved quite simply - by adding an icon in the form of the letter "P" to the upper left corner of the screen (also available from the main menu). It is worth noting that switching between modes occurs in two touches: the first displays help information (useful for beginners), and the second directly activates the selected mode. Specifically, in our test instance (firmware version ver. 1.0.0), the "Shutter Priority" mode did not work and actions were processed similarly to the "P" program mode, regardless of the specified shutter speed value.

A couple of familiar quick settings menus are also in place: full-screen (called by the “INFO” button) and in the form of side columns (called by the “Q” input button in the center of the five-way control unit). In the C.Fn III submenu, you can customize the controls to your liking, but there are very few options available - Shutter keys (AF / AE lock, AE / AF no AE lock) and Movies (video recording, viewing depth of field, not assigned). In the Live View mode, you can display the grid, histogram and basic parameters. But there is no horizon level in the camera.

We also offer a more visual video on camera control capabilities.

Hardware, functionality

The Canon EOS M10 is based on a proprietary APS-C type CMOS sensor (22.3 x 14.9 mm, crop factor 1.6) with an effective resolution of 18 megapixels and a low-pass filter. The proprietary DIGIC 6 processor is responsible for processing the resulting image, optimizing the dynamic range, speed and quite effective noise reduction. An ultrasonic filter is used to protect the matrix from dust.

The device demonstrates a good speed and a high degree of responsiveness to the actions taken, whether it's just moving through the menu or switching shooting modes. The camera “thinks” only during HDR gluing. The process of turning on and creating the first frame takes about 1.5 seconds, which is even faster than the older model.

The burst rate of the Canon EOS M10 is not bad, averaging 4.6 fps. The data buffer paired with the memory card showed the following results: RAW and RAW + JPEG - 7-8 frames each (then stable 2.5 fps in RAW + JPEG and 3-3.5 fps in RAW), JPEG - more than 100 frames without loss of speed (the theoretical limit, according to official data, is about 1000 frames).

The camera is equipped with a classic electronically controlled focal plane shutter. The shutter speed range is from 30 to 1/4000 second in 1/3 EV increments. There is an opportunity to specify the shutter speed by hand (bulb).

The Canon EOS M10 is equipped with a Hybrid CMOS AF II autofocus system (a similar system was used in the Canon EOS M2, while the Canon EOS M3 boasts a more modern third generation). It includes 49 phase and contrast points. Modes are quite standard. With manual focusing, it is possible to increase the aiming area (by 5 or 10 times to choose from) and highlight the sharp edges of the object (focus peaking).

The built-in flash has an original design, which gives a small space in creativity with the ability to direct the light flux to the desired area. The guide number is 5 at ISO 100, which is typical for regular compacts. The sync speed with the included flash is 1/200 second. There is no external flash sync connector, as well as a hot shoe, but you can use the Canon HF-DC2 portable flash.

Among the communication interfaces, we note the built-in NFC and Wi-Fi modules. To get started, you need to install the proprietary Canon Camera Connect application on your mobile device running OS Android or iOS. There is an opportunity to perform basic actions.

Camera photography examplesCanon EOS M10 in "HDR»

The footage shot with the Canon EOS M10 meets the level of amateur DSLRs Canon EOS 650D and Canon EOS 700D, which are equipped with similar sensors. As expected, the automation showed itself well, selecting adequate parameters for exposure and white balance depending on the situation, including in relatively difficult lighting conditions. The final picture as a whole is characterized by decent detail and good sharpness almost over the entire field of the frame (with the exception of small corner zones), pleasant colors and contrast. Of the interesting, we note the “HDR” mode: if the difference is practically invisible with the “Natural” template, then the rest provide a rather interesting and bright picture, but in some places with a slightly unnatural color rendition.

A few words should be said about the autofocus system. If with good lighting in 90% of cases the process of aiming at the subject is fast and accurate, then with insufficient automation often refused to focus, including when the backlight was turned on. The tracking autofocus of the wave is good - tenacious, leads the target well and quickly finds it with short losses from view.

Camera photography examplesCanon EOS M10 with noise reduction activated (JPEG): multi-frame, high, medium, low, off forISO6400 andISO 25600

The results of our traditional tests showed that the Canon EOS M10 can safely shoot at ISO values up to and including ISO 1600. At ISO 3200, you can get acceptable photos, but noise and a slight drop in color saturation become noticeable. At ISO 6400, artifacts are clearly defined, but in some cases noise reduction or processing when shooting in RAW can help - you can safely use it in blogs, in social networks or for home printing on sizes up to A4. The ISO 12800 and 25600 values are accompanied by an abundance of digital noise.

Canon EOS M10: Recording exampledaytime video in 1080p resolution at 30 FPS

Video recording is possible at a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) in MP4 format at 30 fps with progressive scan and stereo sound (but the microphones blow out very easily). The total bitrate reaches 25 Mbps, which is an average value. Video recording is possible in both "Auto" and "M" modes. Connectors for an external microphone or headphones are not provided.

As for the amateur level, the picture is quite acceptable: the detail is average, and the image is smooth, including thanks to tenacious autofocus and OIS. However, the blowing of the microphones makes its own adjustments in the search for calm places and positions.

Offline work

The Canon EOS M10 is powered by a lithium-ion Canon battery LP-E12 with a capacity of 875 mAh (7.2 V; 6.2 Wh). According to official data, its resource should be enough for 255 shots at +23˚С and 210 shots at 0˚С. In real conditions, it turned out to shoot 150 frames and about 7 minutes of video, but at a temperature environment-15˚С. This indicator will vary depending on the settings of the device and the activity of the shooting itself, including upwards if you turn off the wireless modules and do not use the flash. If you plan to shoot actively, for example, while traveling, we recommend purchasing an additional battery.

Canon LC-E12E compact charger with detachable mains cable included. The battery recovery process takes approximately 1.5 hours. USB charging is not available.

Results

CanonEOSM10 - amateur system camera with an emphasis on ease of shooting. Apart from the lens, its body is rather compact and has a minimum of analog controls, which is more than offset by the capabilities of the swivel touch screen and should definitely appeal to beginners. Thanks to the APS-C sensor with an effective resolution of 18 megapixels, the camera guarantees sufficiently high-quality photos even in automatic mode at ISO 1600, however, ISO 3200 can also be considered acceptable (for the amateur class). There are many different modes, functions, creative filters and settings: in terms of functionality, the device is practically in no way inferior to the older model of the mirrorless line. Connectivity modules include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and NFC, allowing you to connect to devices for easy viewing, sharing, and printing footage, as well as basic remote camera control.

The disadvantages of the novelty include the absence of at least a small protrusion for a more comfortable hold, a modest park of optics for the Canon EF-M mount, the absence of a “hot shoe” and the quality of the autofocus system when insufficient lighting. Also, in our copy, the “Shutter Priority” mode did not work (we recommend that you check this moment when buying).

All in all, we have a solid mirrorless camera for beginner photographers, including those who want to move from mobile photography to more “adult” technology while maintaining a relatively compact, easy control and the ability to receive content at the level of entry-class DSLRs.

Advantages:

  • relatively compact and lightweight body;
  • high quality performance;
  • ease of use;
  • swivel display with excellent touch control implementation;
  • APS-C standard matrix with an effective resolution of 18 megapixels;
  • implementation of a large number of software functions and modes;
  • sufficiently high quality of photographic material and good quality of video content;
  • flagship proprietary DIGIC 6 processor;
  • availability of Wi-Fi and NFC modules;
  • a good Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens with optical image stabilization and silent focusing.

Peculiarities:

  • no viewfinder;
  • lack of control dials;
  • no headphone and microphone jacks.

Flaws:

  • not the most comfortable grip;
  • lack of a "hot shoe";
  • a modest park of optics for the Canon EF-M mount;
  • autofocus operation in low light.

We express our gratitude to the Ukrainian representative office of the companyCanon for the camera provided for testing.

I'll start traditionally. Have something to say about Canon EOS M Canon's first interchangeable lens mirrorless camera, introduced in July 2012. I like the little thing - it shoots (in quality) like a DSLR, fits in a pocket, can use older EF and EF-S optics and its EF-M optics, more compact, with a short working distance. The same as I expected from the Canon G1X, but not received. In fact, the camera kills two birds with one stone - it can shoot like more serious DSLRs, but, unlike them, it will still fit into your pocket if necessary. Which is perfectly normal in the mirrorless class.

Canon EOS M, EF-M 22mm f/2.0 STM lens and stock EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

Someone considers "all these mirrorless" either the machinations of the devil, or the nonsense of marketers. I believe that the class has the right to life, these cameras sell well, I see many with this kind of equipment. Not everyone needs a tractor to plant potatoes - for some, a walk-behind tractor is enough. Canon EOS M is the same case.

But among Canon-ists who are not used to mirrorless cameras, the camera is brain-destroying, including due to pricing policy Canon. EOS M immediately after the announcement caused a lot of controversy in thematic forums, publics and blogs, provoked a predictable ambiguous reaction. With a recommended price of $900 for a kit with a Canon EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($800 for a kit with a "pancake" 22mm f/2.0), it is extremely close in price to and , and turns out to be more expensive than the Canon 1100D and , while not being a "reflex camera". It would seem strange, on the one hand, to choose between a DSLR "for the widest range of optics and accessories" and a non-DSLR, which is only a few hundred grams lighter. On the other hand, obviously, playing in the same price range with / this camera can take up much less space in the bag and pull the shoulder much weaker. It even fits in your pocket. It is controlled differently, not with buttons, but on the screen, but it also shoots. And not everyone, I'm sure, is so confused by the possession of the widest fleet of optics, by applying the camera to the eye and other "mirror" subtleties.

The manufacturer is positioning Canon M for "compact upgraders", that is, for owners of all kinds of IXUS and PowerShot, who decided to go higher, into the area of more controlled cameras with a sensor that gives a better picture, the ability to separate the subject from the background with a shallow depth of field (strongly blur background), etc. There are the latest trends in management - on-screen menu, multi-touch. When I first tried it on, I got the impression - this is it, combining an iPhone with a camera.

    The touch screen allows you to focus on any point with one touch; Small size - for traveling light it is the most; raw support.

    This device has a modern design. It is slightly heavier than a soap dish, it is the size of a soap dish, you can always take it with you in your jacket pocket. The video quality is SIGNIFICANTLY better than that of any compact, the picture is beautiful, the color reproduction is excellent. For me, this criterion was decisive in the final choice of apparatus. The quality of pictures (the beauty of the picture) under normal conditions is much better than that of any compact. Some examples of pictures: http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/vadim537/view/714834/?page=0 Possibility of using other Canon lenses through an adapter. The same applies to large outbreaks. (And although I have them, but it kills the whole idea of compactness, therefore, it is unlikely that I will use it). I wrote it myself, .. but for the sake of fun, after all, I bought an adapter :) ... - I did not expect it. Was pleasantly surprised.

    Amazingly high build quality. Excellent color rendering. If there are mini-blotches of blue-green moss on the bark of a tree, then the photo will show exactly these inclusions of blue-green moss. If the beetle has a purple tint on its wings, then you will see this tint in the photo. If the wave is azure and the rays of the purple setting sun pass through it, you will get exactly these rays and this color of the wave in the photo. The photo is of very good quality. Looks great. The touch screen is responsive. The flash has its own batteries. Not stupid with autofocus (it's not fast but accurate). If you take a photo of a mini-twig, then it will focus on it .. Excellent macro photography - it focuses exactly on the flower or bug you wanted to shoot. Portrait mode is great too.

    Excellent build quality, I can’t even believe that it’s plastic, a convenient menu (not like the NEX-5R), it works quickly, everything is familiar, everything is like a Canon DSLR. With the original $150 adapter for EF/EF-S glasses, you can use the entire fleet of Canon optics, while both the stabilizer and autofocus will work. The native 18-55 lens is several times superior to the usual Canon 18-55 bayonet gags, and in all respects. Also pleased with the presence of a hot shoe and a connector for an external microphone, which was so lacking in the NEX. I will not write about the quality of the photo, it is no different from the 650D, the matrices in these cameras are identical.

    High image quality Large sensor High quality materials Convenient menu Compactness with a pancake 22/2 Low cost of the camera and lenses

    Excellent workmanship of the case, pleasant heaviness in the hands. The small size, especially with a pancake, really fits in a jacket pocket. Full functionality of junior DSLRs, convenient control via touch screen. The menu familiar to the kenonist, those who are familiar with the system can not read the instructions. A good final picture straight from the camera with thoroughbred Ken's color reproduction. Precise working out of automation (WB, metering) Compatibility with Canon Speedlite flashes and the possibility of E-TTL control of a cheap and small flash 90 in the kit. Excellent video quality with continuous, smooth and silent auto! focusing (do not press the shutter button during the video, the device itself points to the selected area), the presence of a built-in stereo microphone and the ability to use an external one. Good optics. 18-55

    First of all, you pay attention to the excellent workmanship. No backlash, pleasant but not excessive metal heaviness in the hands, tight mount, smooth operation of all buttons and rings on the lenses. Surprisingly good ergonomics for such a small camera. Whale 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 and 22/2 in line with the latest models of Canon's budget optics - good sharpness, good resistance to backlight, quiet autofocus. .

    Compactness, continuity of EF / EF-S optics, familiar menu, good screen with multi-touch, crop factor x1.6 (for a soap dish), autofocus illumination, Eye-Fi support, low price at the time of the release of the new EOS M2 model

    I liked the quality of photos, it is not inferior to Canon 7d. The camera is slightly heavier than a home compact.

    Compact, great image quality, good build quality, very attractive price, hot shoe.

    No viewfinder, not even an external one;
    Almost 2 lenses are available (17-55 and 22) not needed);
    Non-standard, although convenient, fastening of the strap and the width of the strap itself;
    There is no connector for the remote control;
    Does not display battery percentage.

    Inconvenience flexible management and its touchscreen specifics. Here's a couple more adjustment wheels....
    Focus slow? while SNEEP and .... butterflies and birds flew away from the frame. (although focusing on the touchscreen does not take time to recompose the frame)
    The impossibility of auto focusing in case of obstacles in front of the target: for example, branches, fence bars - due to the large spot of the focus area ..
    High price even with the minimum set (except for SONY RX100 from the considered alternatives)

    You can't carry it with one hand. A mirror is possible, but it is not. Because the DSLR has something to grab onto, while the canon eos m has almost none. You can only take pictures with both hands. That little support on the body - for chickens to laugh, just for show.
    The MAIN disadvantage is that the camera is not at all suitable for "situational" shots. He is NOT FAST. No, no, it is not slower than most soap dishes, but I will give an example. Granny is feeding a squirrel in the park. The squirrel comes down and takes nuts from his hands. On a DSLR with a portrait lens, I would take 30 shots in these seconds (and understanding through the viewfinder whether the squirrel is in focus or not). On eos-m - I took 3 pictures. Yes, one of them came out with dignity, but first he takes a picture ... then he thinks a little ... then he only shows what happened on the screen. And since there is no viewfinder, it’s impossible to understand in focus

    2 years ago

    However, I think that the grip is not very comfortable. I also don’t really like the slight delay between frames (about 0.5-1 second if you turn on photo viewing), the burst shooting speed is slightly lower than that of the NEX-5R, but not critical, well, there are not enough controls, although this is more likely a plus, all the same, the camera is more oriented for non-professional photographers, and so far there is a small park of native EOS M optics, only 3 lenses. I really miss the fifty dollars that I liked so much on the NEX. Although with an adapter you can use everything. Well, for everyone who has a slow autofocus - firmware 2.0.2 solves this problem by 90%. Download from the official site.

    No viewfinder
    Slow autofocus
    Low battery capacity
    Few lenses
    Accidental clicks on the touchscreen when carrying the included camera
    No built-in flash
    Strong noise at ISO more than 3200
    Not the best exposure control

    2 years ago

    Low battery capacity.
    The absence of a portrait lens in the system. 22/2 even on the open blurs weakly, the usual bokeh is not memorable.
    As mentioned by others, no button and screen lock. It's good that the screen is capacitive and does not work from clothes - you can wear it around your neck.
    Low rate of fire for excellent night portrait and HDR performance. In principle, they work well, but at 8-10fps it would be even better.
    When shooting HDR, only jpeg is written to the card :(

    2 years ago

    There is no button to force the screen off, when carrying the camera on, it is easy to accidentally touch the screen and switch modes, for example, turn on the screen shutter mode and get a few shots of the ground from the level of the lower back, or find out when shooting the next frame that the release delay has turned on.
    The stabilizer at 18-55 sometimes blurs the frame.

    2 years ago

    No viewfinder, not enough protrusion to hold with one hand, weak battery, slow autofocus, access to the memory card and battery from the bottom, noise at medium ISO, few EOS-M lenses, high price at the time of release, no Wi-Fi, no GPS.

    2 years ago

    Unfortunately the battery is weak. In RAW format, it takes 150-160 shots until it is completely discharged.

    2 years ago

    The speed of the autofocus system could be higher, there is no built-in flash, a small selection of native lenses.
