Soap making for beginners. Handmade soap. How to make soap with your own hands? Homemade soap recipes. Handmade glycerin soap

For many, a hobby is a way to calm frayed nerves and get into a positive mood. But a hobby can be not only enjoyable, but also useful, for example, soap making.

The process of mixing ingredients, selecting aromas, shades and patterns is truly creative. But to start this most enjoyable activity, you need to stock up on a small amount of knowledge on this topic.

What you need to make soap from scratch at home

You can start making soap right at home. But this requires certain supplies and ingredients. The minimum set of accessories is as follows:

It must be taken into account that all dishes should be made of plastic and not enamel; metals harm essential oils. And this dish cannot be used for anything else.

If everything goes well with the hobby, then over time you will buy more and more molds and other things, but having all the above and the ingredients, you can already get started.

Minimum set of ingredients:

  1. Soap base. It is sold in chips, lumps and granules. You can prepare the base yourself from alkali and oils, so you can be 100% sure of the composition of the soap, but for a beginner it is difficult;
  2. Base oils. These are jojoba, almond, olive, coconut, apricot, peach, avocado, Monoi de Tahiti and others oils. Each oil has a certain property; this question is truly mandatory for the soap maker to study.

To make soap without color and a pleasant aroma, just this is enough. But soap makers also use food flavorings, dyes, and auxiliary substances.

Additional ingredients may be:

  1. Abrasive particles. Ground coffee, ground fruit seeds, oatmeal, sea salt, poppy seeds and others;
  2. Vitamins in capsules;
  3. Honey and other bee products;
  4. Spices. They can act as natural dyes and flavors, having additional effects;
  5. Silk. It gives the soap excellent care properties, but you need to work with it carefully, as it affects the thickness of the soap varnish;
  6. Corn starch. Makes the texture of soap softer and more pleasant when lathering;
  7. Sugar. Soap with added sugar foams much better;
  8. Yogurt. Gives soap a moisturizing effect. But you need to buy yogurt for soap without additives or make it yourself;
  9. Tar. Gives soap an anti-inflammatory effect;
  10. Alcoholic drinks. When mixed with other components, they produce a chemical reaction that releases alcoholates, which have a positive effect on the skin;
  11. Clay. There are several types of it, each of which has its own set of properties;
  12. Vegetable and fruit juice;
  13. Dried herbs and flowers. Besides beneficial properties, they are a decoration, especially dried flower buds. Once you get the hang of it, you can place the dried flower in the center of the transparent soap.

Any of the ingredients can affect texture, density and soapiness, all of which can be determined through experimentation. All this can be bought in a specialized store, if there is no such thing in the city, then you can use the online store, if large order delivery there is free.

The more knowledge there is about the original properties of the product, the greater the desire to buy more and more ingredients. If you want to put soap making on stream, you will have to buy a variety of flavorings and nutrients.

Choosing a base for home soap making

First you need to decide whether it is important for the soap to be made from natural ingredients. If yes, then you need to avoid laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl in the composition.

Soap without them will foam much worse, but will become less aggressive towards the skin.

They are the most popular and cheapest chemical surfactants. They are replaced with the following natural ingredients:

  • laureth sulfosuccinate;
  • lauryl glucoside;
  • cocamidopropyl betaine;
  • cocoglucoside.

Next, you need to decide how transparent the soap should be. The transparent parameter is responsible for this; it is abbreviated as T in the description of the base. If the letter W is indicated in the description, this means that the soap from such a base will be opaque white.

Ready-made soap bases are produced in China, England, Latvia, Germany and Russia. Chinese ones are the most popular, they have a large selection and are less likely to be counterfeited, unlike English and German ones, and it will be difficult for a beginner to distinguish a fake.

Within one manufacturer they are divided into regular and premium. For beginners, it is better to purchase a regular foundation, as it is more affordable and suitable for testing. Premium bases fill the mold better and do not bubble, which is important for those who use molds with small details.

Starter Kit

To prevent a novice soap maker from getting bogged down in the difficulties of choosing, stores sell ready-made kits for beginners. The kit usually includes the following:

  • the basis;
  • plastic bowl with spoon;
  • a pair of plastic molds;
  • universal base oils;
  • natural dyes;
  • flavorings;
  • universal essential oil.

Another option is a capsule set, that is, everything you need to make themed soap. For example, everything you might need to make duck soap or macaroon soap. The kit will also come with instructions and a recipe.

Do not confuse the set of dyes, bases or fragrances that are sold in the soap maker's store with a beginner's set. Such sets will most likely appeal to a professional who is already short on basic ingredients and is ready to experiment.

Another small master class on soap making is in the next video.

The passion for soap making has overwhelmed the needlewomen! The hobby does not require special skills, and success depends only on imagination and knowledge of small secrets. The hobby has a strong practical basis- soap will always be useful in the household, and will not lie like a dead weight on the shelves, like many even the most beautiful crafts. In addition, a piece of hand-made soap will be an excellent gift for any occasion - thematic design of the gift will emphasize its uniqueness.

Materials and accessories

To make soap at home, you need a minimum set of not only accessories, but also materials. You will need:

  1. Soap base.
  2. Base oils.
  3. Fragrances and essential oils.
  4. Dyes.
  5. Decorative decorations and useful additives.
  6. Alcohol in a spray bottle.
  7. Forms for filling.
  8. Plastic cups, plastic spoons, wooden chopsticks, rubber gloves.

Let's take a closer look at each of these components.

The basis

Available in the form of bars or shavings. The base contains alkali, water, and vegetable oils. It can be transparent or matte. In handicraft stores where you can buy soap base, you can also find a special composition for making soap with swirls - beautiful swirls. This base has a more viscous consistency, which allows the layers of the mixture not to mix with each other, but to intertwine in an original way or even to be within clearly defined boundaries.

Instead of buying special soap base, you can use baby soap. This will be the easiest option for making a new piece of detergent. However, such a product will always be matte. Beginning soap makers should take into account that the special base lathers better, has no odor, does not cause irritation, and also hardens and dries faster than baby soap.

Base oils

They are added to soap to make it moisturizing, nourishing, and softening. Such oils do not have a strong odor and are highly fatty. It can be argan, sea buckthorn, olive, almond, coconut, peach, sunflower oil and even a squeeze of wheat germ. Usually the base is added in the amount of 1-2 teaspoons per 100 g of base.

Essential oils

Give products the desired aroma and special properties. Fragrant additives can be used to prevent and treat skin diseases, for example, shea butter and tea or rose tree oil, fir oil to achieve a calming effect, and orange oil to vitaminize the skin. The many available essential additives allow you to create unique compositions not only in terms of smell, but also in terms of healing effect.

Important! Essential oils are added 1-2 drops per 100 g of soap base - their excess causes allergies and even burns.

Dyes

Not only safe commercial mineral-based formulations are used, but also any home remedies - fruit or vegetable juice, food coloring, herbal decoctions. Sometimes the base oil already imparts color, for example, fir oil paints a piece in pleasant green shades. Regular cinnamon imparts a faint aroma and a rich brown color. A substance called titanium dioxide, which is absolutely harmless to health, makes the soap matte. Special pearlescent dyes give a charming shimmer.

Decorative decorations, useful additives

Decorations include all kinds of sparkles, dried fruits, petals, pieces of plants, coffee beans, seeds. Useful additives - milk, cream, coffee grounds, honey, chocolate, ground cereals, loofah - provide a moisturizing, nourishing, scrubbing, massage effect.

Molds, alcohol and accessories

Particular attention is paid to the choice of molds for pouring soap. They allow you to give the pieces interesting shapes. Flowers, animal silhouettes, geometric shapes - everything goes well. Among the materials, preference should be given to silicone, rubber, plastic, because it is difficult to get finished products made of glass or ceramics is quite difficult. You can use not only special molds, but also any you like, for example, for baking or even children’s molds for making Easter cakes.

Attention! You cannot use metal molds to pour liquid soap mass due to unforeseen chemical reactions - the product may change color or become hazardous to health.

Medical alcohol poured into a spray bottle will help get rid of the formation of small bubbles on the finished soap. The liquid must be sprayed onto the mold before pouring and onto the surface of the piece that remains outside. If a multi-layer product is being made, then each layer must be sprayed.

Additional accessories include plastic cups for diluting the base, wooden sticks for stirring it, plastic measuring spoons for base oil, pipettes for essential oils, toothpicks for scratching adjacent surfaces when making multi-layer products. It is advisable to work with thin gloves, and if soap shavings are used, it is better to wear a respirator.

A quick way to make soap for beginners

There are many recipes for making soap at home that are suitable for beginners. In this case, all instructions are reduced to a few simple steps:

Important! If the soap base is melted in the microwave, then you cannot let it boil - this will ruin its properties.

At first, you can use ready-made recommendations for creating compositions to learn how to handle the basics and select combinations of essential oils and additives. Even a little experience in the future will allow you to come up with your own unique products, not only in design, but also in content. The main thing is to use only safe ingredients.

Advanced soap makers make their products from scratch, that is, they use solid oils and a lye solution. After production, such products must be aged for 2 months. This is a very long method of soap production, which only experienced craftsmen can do.

So, soap making at home for beginners, simple recipes...

Now let's take a practical look at how to make the soap of your dreams - useful, beautiful and unique. We will move from simple to complex, and photo finished products will help find inspiration and get inspired. In all recipes, ingredients are indicated in teaspoons.

Attention! In each case, remember to use alcohol to eliminate air bubbles.

1. Honey aroma

For 100 g of melted transparent base, take a spoonful of argan oil and honey. The components are combined and mixed thoroughly. If you add a pinch of pearlescent dye, the finished piece will acquire an extraordinary shimmer.

Beneficial properties: nourishing and softening the skin.

2. Honey-olive tenderness

The idea is inspired by Mediterranean motifs. To prepare you will need 300 g of any melted base, 3 tablespoons of honey and olive oil, 3 drops of green dye, a spoon of dried ground basil. All components are added one by one to the base and mixed thoroughly. The mass is poured into a mold designed for 3 pieces.

Beneficial properties: nutrition, softening, scrubbing.

3. Delicate cleansing

It is necessary to prepare 100 g of a melted base, transparent or matte, into which a spoonful of finely ground sea salt, 2 spoons of white clay, and 4 drops of rosewood oil are added one by one. The mixture is kneaded and poured into the mold.

You can use ground coffee or coffee grounds as a scrub.

Useful properties: cleansing, scrubbing, soothing effect.

4. For irritated skin

Use a matte base - 100 g, 2 tablespoons of pink clay, a spoonful of apricot oil, vanilla flavoring - 5 drops.

Beneficial properties: gentle cleansing, relieving irritation.

5. For problematic skin

If your skin is tormented by acne, then you can try a simple recipe with a healing effect. The base is taken transparent - 100 g, and half a spoonful of grape seed and olive oil is added to it, as well as a spoonful of finely chopped seaweed. If desired, you can add color with blue dye and smell with sea flavor, taken 2 drops each.

Useful properties: cleansing, nutrition, disinfection, treatment.

6. Strawberry bliss

It is made from 100 g of opaque base, 5 tablespoons of heavy cream and half a spoon each of olive oil and strawberry seed butter. Strawberry and cream flavors and pink coloring are added.

Beneficial properties: nutrition, hydration.

Attention! If you can only buy a clear soap base, then buy titanium dioxide - adding it gives it a matte finish.

7. Coffee-yoghurt pie

This option for making soap is not as simple as the previous ones. It involves the creation of a multilayer structure. The main rule is that each layer must dry well! To “bake” a soap cake you will need: a transparent base 100 g, 3 tablespoons of ground cinnamon - it will give a dark color and a light aroma, titanium dioxide - liquid or dry, cappuccino flavoring, purple dye, alcohol.

The manufacturing sequence is as follows:

  1. Melt the base, take a quarter of it, mix with cinnamon until dark, pour into the mold, sprinkle with alcohol.
  2. While the first layer is drying, make a second layer - add titanium dioxide, cappuccino flavoring, and a drop of purple dye to the base to give it a tint.
  3. Carefully scratch the frozen first layer with a toothpick so that the second tier sticks firmly to it. Pour the second layer, sprinkle with alcohol.
  4. The third tier is made by analogy with the first, and the fourth - by analogy with the second.

The thickness of each tier is selected arbitrarily.

Useful properties: invigorating effect of coffee.

8. Coniferous tornado

Not the easiest recipe for making soap, because it uses a technique with swirls - beautiful swirls. For such a product, a special base is taken - in stores it is called “Base for making soap with swirls”. It differs from a regular base in a thicker consistency, which prevents the interpenetration of liquid layers. The product is made from half a kilo of base, since it is difficult to make swirls from ingredients taken in small quantities. The piece is then cut into small pieces.

Let's take a closer look at the manufacturing process:

  • half a kilo of melted base is poured equally into two glasses;
  • in one of the glasses, 3 drops of green pigment are pre-diluted with 5 ml of water, since it will be difficult to mix the dye with the melted base;
  • in another glass a matte mass is made using titanium dioxide;
  • Add a spoonful of fir oil to each glass, mix everything thoroughly, and remove bubbles with alcohol.

The main thing in obtaining beautiful swirls is the pouring technique.

Take a square silicone mold and pour a puddle of dark green mixture into the center. Do not try to pour so much that the liquid immediately spreads over the entire bottom area. Then pour a little matte mixture into the center of the green spot, then green again into its center, then matte again, and so pour both cups until the base in them runs out. Spray the surface with alcohol. After the soap has dried, cut it into pieces - the amazingly beautiful swirls will not leave anyone indifferent.

Beneficial properties: calming effect.

9. Citrus scented massage soap

The massage effect is achieved using loofah - a dried Asian plant with a porous structure. The well-known washcloths are made from loofah. You can buy it at a craft store.

Here's what you need to make this unusual soap:

  • take a piece of loofah and soak it in a round cup for 15 minutes until it takes the same shape;
  • after softening, take out the loofah, squeeze it out, dry thoroughly with a paper towel - excess water can spoil the properties of the soap;
  • melt 170 g of transparent base, pour it into two glasses;
  • in the first glass add 6 drops of grape seed carrier oil, 7 drops of yellow dye, 3 drops of orange flavoring;
  • in the second glass, add the same amount of flavoring and base oil, and take 6 drops of red and 2 drops of yellow dye - the result is a mass reddish-orange colors;
  • wait until the mixture in each glass thickens a little and a light film appears on its surface;
  • put the loofah in the mold and start pouring the soap mixtures from two glasses at the same time, but in different corners;
  • Using a wooden stick, smooth the border between the colors and remove bubbles with alcohol.

Beneficial properties: massage, scrubbing effect, invigorating effect.

Soap making at home is not only an exciting hobby, but also a very useful activity.

Shopping Lists for Beginner Soap Makers

List 1

If you don’t know the list of what you need to make soap from baby soap, then that’s what we’ll talk about in more detail later.

  • First, you will need the baby soap itself; remember that it must be natural and without any dyes or fragrances.

If you don’t know how to choose it correctly, then just remember that there should be few of them in the list of ingredients, this guarantees its naturalness.

  • Dyes, you can do without them, but if you want your product to ultimately turn out beautiful and original, then you can use food coloring.

Remember that they may be on different bases, for example, they come in helium, water, alcohol or oil, choose those that are easier for you to work with.

  • You always want your soap to smell delicious and pleasant; different flavors can help you achieve this result.

Also remember that some fragrances may have a slightly different scent in the product itself, so try to choose fragrances that you are confident in.

To avoid mistakes, choose specific scents, such as mint, strawberry, lemon, chocolate, etc. Try to avoid fragrances with confusing names, such as summer rain.

  • Essential oils and some other useful additives will give your soap one or another effect.

Remember that they can also be different, it is best to choose ordinary liquid oils, they are quite convenient to work with and even if you have never been involved in soap making, you will definitely succeed.

  • Take care of the equipment that you will need to create this or that soap, these could be pots, plates, bowls, spoons, and more.

Remember that those things that are intended for soap making cannot be used for any other purposes, for example, culinary purposes. It is best to allocate dishes, for example, that are superfluous, or purchase equipment that will be used only for these purposes.

Try making cold process soap using our recipes first. We are waiting for your results in the comments to the recipes.

So, since you are already here, then the issue of home soap making is relevant to you. Welcome to the world of soap making! 🙂

Where to begin? I will try to cover all the questions that novice soap makers have in this article. But I still recommend taking a walk around the site. There is already enough material for beginners collected here. All necessary links will be in the article.

Working with alkalis

Homemade soap is made from vegetable oils and an alkaline solution, which, when interacting with each other, turn into soap - that’s in a nutshell :)

In order to avoid troubles, you need to carefully study. You should use lye carefully, but don't be afraid of it. It is working with alkali that often stops beginners.

The rules are simple: use safety glasses, gloves and a respirator, as well as work with a hood in a well-ventilated area. More details at the link above.

Modern home soap making means working with two types of alkali: NaOH for hard soap and KOH for soft soap.

Solid soap - classic version, soft - a natural base for shampoos, scrubs, beldi, etc.

Some types involve the use of two types of alkali at once, but this is beyond the basic level. We will return to them later in a separate article.

How to make a natural soap recipe from scratch

Superfat in soap from scratch is the basis of a successful recipe. Superfat is excess oils that do not react with alkali, i.e. something that does not turn into soap and remains an oil that cares for the skin.

With the cold method of soap making, the superfat is immediately put into the soap calculator; with the hot method, it is added at the end of the process, before putting the soap into the mold. Link to article :)

The oils used to make soap from scratch have different properties. The presence of one or another oil in the soap determines its final quality. The composition of oils also affects the hardness, foaming, shelf life and caring qualities of soap.

There are certain ones that will be very useful for beginning soap makers. But I still recommend not getting hung up on the rules and experimenting with the composition :) Many legendary varieties of soap, for example, Castilian, Marseille, Aleppo, do not at all correspond to the parameters of an ideally balanced product.

Soap making methods

There are two main methods of soap making - cold and hot. It is generally accepted that the cold method is more suitable for beginner soap makers.

Indeed, the cold method is simpler. With it, the soap is not actually boiled, but only kneaded. All components are put into it at once, which means the process takes less time. But then cold process soap requires aging for several weeks.

Soap prepared using the hot method requires more effort and time when preparing, but has a number of advantages over cold soap - there is no maturation period, it is possible to add various useful additives to ready-made soap, and it is better suited for aromatization with essential oils.

Some types of soap are best prepared cold, others, on the contrary, hot.

Templates and molds for handmade soap

If you decide to take up soap making seriously and make a profit from sales, then you will need templates that will indicate the composition of the products, name, etc. Such templates can be downloaded from special portals. In addition to labels, you will also need various shapes. Such containers are made of plastic, rubber or silicone. You cannot use molds made of glass or metal, because it is problematic to get the product out of solid containers; metal is susceptible to corrosion.

Soap molds self made

Heat Resistant Plastic Molds They are made taking into account the fact that the soap base will be poured into them hot, and the molds, in turn, will not be deformed. Their great advantage is that there are a lot of such products - both small and large figures are available - for preparing several bars of homemade soap at the same time.

Plastic soap molds

Silicone forms are also convenient to use. They do not require special care and are also soft, which makes it much easier to “release” the soap when it is ready. The service life of such containers is longer than that of plastic ones.

Silicone molds for making soap

IMPORTANT: Before pouring the base, grease the molds with oil, this will make it easier for the soap to come out of the molds. If this does not help, then put the container of soap in the freezer, and after a while, pull it out by pressing on the mold.

DIY soap flowers

If you are a creative person and like to make crafts with your own hands, then you can make flowers from soap yourself. Some doubt creeps in - is this possible, since the soap base is not plastic? To make the material softer, you need to use a little trick when preparing the base.

To prepare it you will need:

  • base (soap) or baby soap - 230 grams
  • regular gelatin, which is sold in supermarkets - one large spoon
  • water or herbal decoction - 8-9 large spoons
  • dyes, aromatic oils - optional
  • regular knife, potato peeling knife

Roses from soap base

Procedure

  1. Pour gelatin with water (cold), leave for 43-56 minutes to swell
  2. Prepare the base - grate it, melt it, add a teaspoon of water.
  3. Then pour aromatic oils, dye, etc. into the base, mix the resulting mass with the prepared gelatin
  4. Pour the mixture into round molds
  5. When it hardens, pull out the resulting cylinders
  6. Now all that remains is to use a vegetable knife to cut the petals for the rose and mold the flower, as if from plasticine

DIY soap rose

You can also make flowers simply in special molds. It is enough to fill the container and, a few minutes after hardening, take the finished flower out of it. Any flight of fancy is welcome. You can come up with different shades for the flower and leaves.

DIY clay soap

RECIPE: Take one hundred grams of white base, chop and melt in the microwave. For this soap, it is advisable to take a mold with a pattern at the top. Fill the drawing with the prepared mixture. Add clay (pink) to the rest of the mixture - two small spoons, grape seed oil, wheat germ oil, one teaspoon each, D-panthenol (12 drops), aroma oil (3 drops). Mix the mass well. We wait until it begins to harden slightly, only then pour it into the mold. This will prevent the clay from settling.
